Complete Septic Systems

  • Conventional Systems

A conventional septic system is a traditional, gravity-fed wastewater treatment system consisting of a septic tank and a subsurface drain field.

The system uses natural processes to treat household wastewater, relying on the soil for final filtration and disposal.

However, this type of system can only be installed in areas with suitable soil and low groundwater levels.

    Key Points

Suitability is key: A conventional system is a viable option in Texas only if the property has appropriate soil conditions to support this system, such as sandy or loamy soils, and is not affected by a high water table, heavy clay, or bedrock. A site evaluation performed by a licensed professional is required to confirm the soil's suitability.

Permitting: A permit is required to install or alter an On-Site Sewage Facility (OSSF) in Texas.

While the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) sets the standards, local county or city authorities typically issue the permits and may have more stringent requirements.

Maintenance: Regular pumping of the septic tank is recommended every 3 to 5 years and is crucial to prevent sludge from accumulating and clogging the drain field, which can lead to system failure.

  • Aerobic Systems

An aerobic septic system is an advanced wastewater treatment unit (ATU) that uses oxygen to accelerate the natural decomposition of waste.

This technology is a common alternative to conventional septic systems, especially on properties with poor soil conditions, high water tables, or limited space.

Unlike a conventional system that relies solely on naturally occurring anaerobic bacteria, an aerobic system adds mechanical components to enhance the treatment process. The wastewater moves through multiple compartments where it is treated more thoroughly before disposal.

    Key Advantages

Suitable for challenging sites: Aerobic systems are highly effective in areas with clay-heavy soil, rocky ground, or a high water table where conventional systems would fail.

Smaller footprint: The advanced treatment process means the drain field or irrigation area can be much smaller than a conventional leach field.

Environmental benefits: Because the effluent is treated to a much higher standard, it poses a lower risk of contaminating groundwater.

Water reuse: The treated wastewater can be repurposed for landscape irrigation

  • ET Beds / Drip Systems

An ET (evapotranspiration) bed septic system is a specific type of on-site sewage facility designed for locations where soil conditions prevent conventional or standard systems from functioning effectively.

This system disposes of wastewater into the atmosphere through evaporation from the soil surface and transpiration from plants, rather than relying on soil absorption.

ET beds are a viable option for properties with challenging soil, such as heavy clay, rocky, shallow bedrock, or high ground water tables.

    Key Points

Climate dependent: ET systems are most effective in the more arid and semi-arid regions of Central and West Texas, where the annual evaporation rate significantly exceeds the average rainfall. They are not suitable for very wet areas.

Regulations and sizing: The design and sizing of ET systems are regulated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and determined by local evapotranspiration and rainfall rates. The surface area of the bed is a key factor in system sizing.

Maintenance: ET beds require less intensive maintenance than aerobic systems, as they lack mechanical components like pumps and aerators. However, homeowners are responsible for maintaining the vegetative cover and may need to manually alternate flow between fields.
